Disciplinary Literacy:
Theorizing and Writing in Engineering Education
This course will introduce you to ways of seeing in engineering education, with a particular focus on writing and theorizing. The readings and writing assignments are designed to help you meet the the following learning outcomes:
  • define the roles of writing and the ethical responsibilities of writers in engineering education research;
  • identify and apply revision strategies to improve the clarity, coherence, and conciseness of writing in engineering education;
  • describe the rhetorical structures of research articles in engineering education;
  • define the role of paradigms and theoretical and conceptual frameworks in engineering education research and practice;
  • compare and contrast the advantages and limitations of different frameworks for studying a given issue in the field;
  • synthesize multiple studies addressing a specific topic in the field to develop a sound argument about the current state of research on that topic.
